Composite Decking Care & Maintenance Tips

Composite decking offers exceptional durability and low maintenance compared to traditional wood, but proper care ensures your deck stays beautiful for decades.

Following these guidelines will help protect your investment and keep your outdoor space looking its best year-round.

Regular Cleaning & General Maintenance

Clean at Least Twice Yearly

Schedule deep cleaning sessions in spring and fall at minimum. For high-traffic areas or decks exposed to heavy debris, increase cleaning frequency as needed.

Basic Cleaning Method

Use warm water and mild dish soap with a soft-bristle brush, scrubbing in the direction of the grain pattern. For stubborn dirt, a gentle household cleaner can be used on composite materials.

Pressure Washing

If using a pressure washer, exercise extreme caution!

  • Keep pressure below 2,500 PSI
  • Maintain the nozzle at least 12 inches above the deck surface
  • Always spray in the direction of the grain pattern
  • Test on an inconspicuous area first

Keep the Gaps Clear

Regularly remove debris from between decking boards to ensure proper drainage. Use a broom or stiff brush to dislodge accumulated dirt, leaves, and organic matter.

Water Management & Ventilation

Prevent Standing Water

Standing water can cause staining over time. After rain or cleaning, sweep away any pooled water and address drainage issues promptly.

Improve Drainage Around Your Deck

  • Grade soil away from the deck perimeter to prevent water accumulation
  • Direct downspouts, extensions, and splash guards away from deck areas
  • Ensure adequate clearance between ground level and deck boards

Maintain Proper Airflow

Adequate ventilation under and between decking boards is essential for preventing mold growth and moisture damage. Never block ventilation gaps or airflow pathways.

Stain Removal

Oil & Grease Stains

Act quickly—the longer oil or grease sits, the deeper it penetrates the composite fibers. Start with soap and water. If unsuccessful, test a household degreaser like Fantastik on an inconspicuous area before treating the stain.

Tar & Asphalt

Use De-Solv-It Citrus Solution or similar citrus-based cleaner. Always follow the manufacturer’s application instructions and test in a hidden area first.

Mold & Mildew

If mold appears on your deck, several effective commercial cleaners are available:

  • 30 Seconds® Outdoor Cleaner by Collier Manufacturing, LLC – Safe for use around lawns and plants when used as directed; biodegradable once rinsed into soil
  • Composite Deck Cleaner & Enhancer by Expert Chemical Company – Heavy-duty, mildly alkaline chlorinated cleaner designed specifically for mold and mildew removal

Always strictly follow manufacturer instructions when using any cleaning product.

Winter Care

Snow & Ice Removal

  • Use calcium chloride-based ice melt or rock salt only
  • Never use ice melt products with added colorants, as dyes can permanently stain composite decking
  • Avoid using sand, which can scratch the surface
  • Never use metal shovels or sharp-edged tools that could gouge or damage boards
  • Use plastic shovels or snow blowers instead

Furniture & Accessories

Choose Deck-Safe Mats & Rugs

Use only polypropylene or colorfast woven rugs on composite decking. Avoid mats with rubber, vinyl, or latex backings, as these materials can leave marks on your deck surface. While these marks can usually be removed, prevention is easier than cleanup.

Protect High-Traffic Areas

Consider placing protective pads under furniture legs and grill stands to prevent scratches and indentations, especially in frequently used areas.
