Everything You Need to Know About Composite and PVC Decks

Benefits of Composite and PVC Decks

Composite and PVC decks have become increasingly popular choices for outdoor decking materials, offering a range of benefits over traditional wood decking. These modern alternatives combine durability, low maintenance, and aesthetic appeal, making them an attractive option for homeowners. Below are some of the key benefits of composite and PVC decks:

  1. Durability
    • Composite and PVC decking materials are engineered to withstand the elements, including moisture, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations.
    • Unlike traditional wood decks, they are resistant to rotting, warping, splintering, and insect damage, ensuring longevity and structural integrity.
  2. Low Maintenance
    • One of the most significant advantages of composite and PVC decks is their minimal maintenance requirements.
    • They do not require regular staining, sealing, or painting like wood decks, saving homeowners time and money on upkeep.
    • Routine cleaning with soap and water is typically all that’s needed to keep composite and PVC decks looking their best.
  3. Longevity
    • Composite and PVC decks have a longer lifespan compared to wood decks, lasting from 25 to 50 years or more with proper care, depending on the chosen type of a deck board and manufacturer.
    • Their resistance to moisture and mold growth helps prevent premature deterioration, maintaining their appearance and structural integrity over time.
  4. Aesthetic Appeal
    • Composite and PVC decking come in a wide range of colors, textures, and finishes, allowing homeowners to achieve the desired look and usability for their outdoor space.
    • These materials can mimic the appearance of natural wood without the drawbacks, offering versatility and design flexibility.
  5. Eco-Friendly
    • Many composite decking products are made from recycled materials, such as plastic bags and wood fibers, reducing the demand for virgin resources.
    • PVC decks can be recycled at the end of their lifespan, contributing to sustainability efforts and reducing environmental impact.
  6. Safety
    • Composite and PVC decks are designed with safety in mind, offering features such as slip resistance and fire resistance, providing peace of mind for homeowners and their families.
    • Unlike wood decks, they are less likely to splinter or develop sharp edges, reducing the risk of injury.
  7. Cost Effectiveness
    • While the upfront cost of composite and PVC decking may be higher than wood, their long-term durability and low maintenance requirements can result in cost savings over time.
    • Additionally, the absence of ongoing expenses for staining, sealing, and repairs can make them a more economical choice in the long run.

In conclusion, composite and PVC decks offer numerous advantages over traditional wood decking, including durability, low maintenance, aesthetic appeal, and environmental sustainability. These modern materials provide homeowners with a long-lasting and visually appealing outdoor living space while minimizing the time and effort required for upkeep.

FAQ

We Are Here To Help You With Any Questions You May Have

Improve drainage around your deck by grading the soil to eliminate standing water underneath. Additionally, direct downspouts, downspout extensions, and splashguards away from your composite deck to prevent water from pooling near or under the structure.
Keep your composite deck dry and avoid allowing water to stand on the surface for extended periods. While composite decking is designed to be water-resistant, standing water over time can cause staining and may affect the appearance of your deck.
Clean your composite deck as often as needed, at least twice each year. If you decide to use a pressure washer, use extreme caution and use at pressures less than 2,500 psi at 12” above the deck surface.
To remove tar or asphalt, use De-Solv-It Citrus Solution. Be sure to follow manufacturer’s recommendations.
For oil and grease stains, speedy clean up is the best. The longer the oil or grease sits on the surface the most likely it is to soak into composite wood fibers. If soap and water don’t do the trick, test an inconspicuous area using a cleaner such as Fantastik.
Use polypropylene or colorfast woven rugs on your Fiberon composite deck only. Any mat with a rubber, vinyl or latex backing could mark your deck. Although the marks can usually be removed, we recommend avoiding these materials.
